Taiwan’s largest container line reported a 71% drop in first-quarter net profit Thursday, citing sharply lower freight rates in the period.
Evergreen Marine, in a filing to the Taiwan stock exchange, said its first quarter net profit fell to $263 million from $897 million a year earlier. Revenue was down 25% to $2.7 billion. Highlighting the impact of lower freight rates in its first-quarter financials, Evergreen saw a 22% year-over-year drop in average revenue per TEU, to $968/TEU.

Wan Hai Lines has posted a 12% year-on-year drop in its 2026 first quarter profits. Net profit attributable to shareholders was TWD 7.67bn ($243m), from TWD 8.7bn in the same year-ago period. Revenue also fell 9.4% year on year to TWD 33.61bn, from TWD 37.09bn in the first quarter of 2025.
Yang Ming Marine Transport says it will push on with fleet renewal plans despite a slump in first-quarter results. Revenue slid 15% year on year to TWD 38.66bn ($1.22bn) from TWD 45.51bn. The Taiwanese listed liner also posted a net profit after tax of TWD 1.44bn. According to S&P Capital IQ, the figure in the corresponding period last year was TWD 7.78bn. (TW)

Hapag-Lloyd chief executive Rolf Habben Jansen said the carrier endured a difficult start to 2026, with weak volumes and adverse weather in its key transatlantic market disrupting operations in January and February, although second-quarter trading has begun to improve. The world’s fifth-largest containership operator reported a group net loss of $256m for the first quarter, compared to a net profit of $469m for the first three months of 2025. First quarter 2026 group revenue was $4.9bn, down nearly 17% year on year, while earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization fell to $494m from $1.3bn in the same period last year.

HMM is taking action on surging fuel prices amid the Middle East turmoil. The container ship, VLCC and bulker player announced on Tuesday that first quarter net profit had been slashed to KRW 354bn ($237.6m), down from KRW 740bn in the same period of 2025. Revenue decreased by 4.8% to KRW 2.7 trillion, while operating earnings came in at KRW 270bn, 56% lower year-on-year.
