EVERGREEN has entered into an agreement with Japanese owner Shoei Kisen Kaisha to charter 12 containerships of 11,000 teu as the Taiwanese carrier puts together the final pieces of its latest fleet expansion plan.
The world’s sixth largest carrier on tonnage terms announced at the start of the year that through its two subsidiaries, Greencompass Marine and Evergreen Marine (Hong Kong), it will order and charter up to 20 ultra large containerships of 11,000 teu to maintain industry competitiveness.
Last week, the group confirmed that it had placed an order worth $754m with South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries for eight 12,000 teu containerships.
Evergreen said that its order with Shoei Kisen Kaisha will see Greencompass Marine and EM (Hong Kong) charter six vessels apiece upon delivery, which will begin in the third quarter of 2020 through to the final quarter of 2021.
With the 11,000 teu units slightly smaller that the ULCs plying the Asia-Europe trade, Evergreen said that this will bring greater flexibility in terms of fleet deployment. This will also allow for safe transit through the recently expanded Panama Canal.
A spokesperson for Evergreen declined to comment on which shipyard the vessels will be built. However, Evergreen already has an agreement in place with Shoei Kisen Kaisha to charter 11 18,000 teu vessels, to be delivered this and next year, that are being built at Imabari Shipbuilding, its parent company.
