Spot rates reported by the Shanghai Containerised Freight Index show a continued slide as carrier efforts to maintain rates through capacity cuts fail to suffice. The overall index fell a further 2.8% to reach 886.8, its lowest point since May 2020, when the sector was only just beginning to emerge from the shock of initial pandemic lockdowns. Falls were seen across all trades. The Asia-Europe headhaul dipped under $600 per feu for the first time since October 2019, and the more resilient Asia-Mediterranean trade fell by another 4%.
