Equipment shortages in Asia will get worse over the next two weeks, say carriers, impacting both deep sea and intra-Asia trades. Maersk has told customers the strong cargo demand out of Asia Pacific would likely continue throughout the second-quarter, but…“Schedule reliability is impacted by two main factors: recent delays from Europe via Suez Canal; and lower port productivity, especially on transpacific and European trade routes,” the company added. As a result, the shortage of empty containers remains an “industry-wide challenge” across Asia, said Maersk, with this week and next seeing the “largest impact” because “empty containers coming back to Asia are delayed and import returns are lower”.

Container spot rates are beginning to head upwards again across all trades from already elevated levels, as carriers reduce their commitment to contract volumes in favour of much higher FAK rates. The Freightos Baltic Index (FBX) China-North Europe component edged up to $7,316 per 40ft this week, and market reports suggest rates on the route are set to soar again next week, returning to their mid-February peak of $8,430, and possibly higher.

An attempt to refloat the strandedcontainer ship blocking the Suez Canal has failed, the ship's technical manager, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, said on Friday. The firm said a Dutch rescue team from Smit Salvage had confirmed that two additional tugs would arrive on March 28 to assist in refloating the ship. Hapag-Lloyd has turned in significantly improved financial results despite the coronavirus pandemic. The company saw its net result rise 155% to $1.1bn for the 2020 financial year, up from $418m in 2019, according to its annual report published today. The main drivers were cost savings of more than $500m, as well as slightly improved freight rates and lower bunker prices, the company said. Revenue increased by roughly 3% to $14.6bn. This was mainly due to a 4% increase in the average freight rate to 1,115 per teu.

The OECD said the world economy is likely to expand by 5.6% in 2021. The significantly brighter outlook reflects the deployment of effective vaccines and also a contribution from economic stimulus measures in the US, including those President Biden's administration is seeking to have approved by Congress. The global economy is now likely to reach prepandemic levels of activity by the middle of this year, the report suggests. But that does not mean the pandemic related damage will have been reversed by then.
