Yang Ming posts net operating loss for 2023 Yang Ming, Taiwan’s second largest carrier, posted a net operating loss of –TWD 1.7 bn (–USD 53.4 M) for 2023 following a year of ‘inflation and economic slowdown’. The line nevertheless managed to report a positive result at the bottom line.

Container spot rates have closed out the month with new lows, as the weak peak season drifts to an end. Spot rates reported by the Shanghai Containerised Freight Index show a continued slide as carrier efforts to maintain rates through capacity cuts fail to suffice. The overall index fell a further 2.8% to reach 886.8, its lowest point since May 2020, when the sector was only just beginning to emerge from the shock of initial pandemic lockdowns. Falls were seen across all trades. The Asia-Europe headhaul dipped under $600 per feu for the first time since October 2019, and the more resilient Asia-Mediterranean trade fell by another 4%.
